As summer comes to a close, we begin the transition to fall. Cooler temperatures are on the way, which can lead to changing concerns for your furry companions. Here are a few things to consider this fall to keep your pets healthy and comfortable.

The beautiful fall weather leads many owners to enjoy the great outdoors, so it is a good idea to be prepared. Flea, tick, and heartworm protection are advised for most dogs. Also, keep in mind vaccines for diseases like parvo, Bordetella (kennel cough), flu and lepto, if you venture outside your home with your dog. These preventative measures can keep your pup pest and disease free.

If your outdoor adventures are in town, be sure to keep your dog on a leash. Unpredictable encounters with stray dogs or vehicles can lead to a serious emergency. Additionally, as the daylight hours get shorter, be sure you and your dog are wearing reflective clothing/leashes, if you are walking after dark.

Allergies are another concern. The season changes bring different pollens and molds which can impact your pet’s allergies. If your pet suffers from itching, sneezing, ear issues, or watery eyes, allergies may be the cause. Contact your veterinarian for possible treatments if your pet has allergies. Though allergies cannot be cured, there are highly effective treatments that can ease your pet’s itch!

Autumn brings Halloween, which often brings humans bounties of sweets. Be sure to keep candy, chocolate, and other sweets stored in pet-safe areas. Many owners underestimate a determined pet. Dogs are known to jump on a chair to reach the kitchen counter in order to obtain the desired treat, so be sure to keep these sweet treats in the pantry or stored in pet-resistant containers.

Now that the kids are back to school and we are not yet to holiday hustle and bustle, it’s a great time to do your pet’s annual exam. This will allow you to update any needed vaccines, so you are ready for holiday pet boarding. If you need to board your pet for the holidays, now is the time to schedule. Boarding facilities and pet sitters book up months in advance, so make your reservations early.

With a little preparation, you can ensure your furry friends stay healthy, happy, and comfortable throughout the season.

In the spirit of fall fun, Karing for Kreatures is sponsoring the fourth annual Skeleton Soiree. Vet Assistant, Hannah Rodriguez, has done a great job with distributing over 25 skeletons to downtown Lemoore businesses so far. We only have six skeletons left, so if you are a downtown Lemoore business, be sure to contact the office at 559-997-1121 to grab one of our remaining spooks! Also, be sure to mark your calendars with the Downtown Lemoore Candy Crawl Oct. 19. The Lemoore downtown businesses will be passing out free candy to trick or treaters and everyone can check out all the creative skeleton displays.

We are very excited to see which of this year’s participants will take home the $500 prize. The spooky displays are always so creative! May you enjoy the beauty of autumn weather with your pets and make the most of the time spent together.

Dr. Kaitlen Lawton-Betchel grew up in Lemoore and is an alumni of West Hills College and Fresno Pacific University. She received her doctoral degree from Midwestern University in Arizona. She practices at Karing for Kreatures Veterinary Hospital in Lemoore.
