Traveling with dogs has become increasingly popular, especially in the summer months, and there are a number of ways to prepare for success when your best friend tags along. Creating a planning and packing list for them will allow you to have a smooth trip without forgetting the essentials.
• Allow your dog time to get used to car travel.
• Bring copies and take screenshots of current vaccinations and microchip numbers.
• Remember to pack collars, harnesses, leashes and ID tags (most leash laws require a six-foot maximum lead).
• Bring food, treats, water and bowls.
• If traveling for an extended period of time, research where you can buy pet food along the way and call ahead. Many stores offer custom orders, but be sure to give plenty of notice for the delivery.
• Pack pet medications and a first aid kit.
• Always have a tie-out when camping.
• Include plenty of interactive toys.
• Identify the locations of 24-hour emergency veterinary hospitals along your route.
• Plan to use a seat belt or crate for the car. Airbags can cause injuries; best practice is to keep pets in your vehicle’s rear seats.
• Plan stops for exercise, water and potty breaks as needed.
• Be sure that all the places you’re visiting are dog friendly. Plan ahead if doggie daycare, pet sitting or overnight boarding might be needed.
• Don’t leave your pet unattended in a car. Car temps can be 20-50 degrees higher than outdoor temps, especially in the warmer months.
• Follow leash laws and remember to pick up after your dog.
