A 37-year-old plasterer from Bangor has been fined £300 and bound over to keep the peace after threatening to rub a neighbour's face in dog urine.

Patrick Aaron McCann, who runs his own plastering firm, was sentenced at Newtownards Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to improper use of communications.

The incident occurred after the neighbour's dog repeatedly urinated in a flower box outside McCann's house

The court heard that McCann sent a threatening message via Facebook under the name ‘Paddy Mac' to the dog owner.

In the message, he wrote: “See you letting your dog p**s in our flower box, I can clearly see you on camera, next time I'm going to come down and rub your face in it you wee scumbag.”

The victim subsequently reported the message to police.

When interviewed by police, McCann admitted sending the message and claimed he “did not see anything wrong with it.”

This marks McCann's second conviction for such behaviour, as prosecutors revealed he had previously been found guilty of sending a “menacing email” in a separate incident.

McCann's solicitor told the court the incident arose from an “ongoing dispute” about dog fouling, though relations between the parties had since “calmed down significantly.”

They added that these cases are becoming more and more common.

The defence also noted that “it isn't the most threatening message” and revealed that McCann suffers from “significant mental health issues.”

District Judge Mark Hamill responded that the defendant “must understand the concept of the offence” given his previous record.

The man was sentenced at Newtownards Magistrates Court last month

In his ruling, Judge Hamill issued a stern warning to McCann, stating: “You're not getting probation for this, so here it is, you are not to do the like of this for the next two years.”

The judge imposed a £300 fine and bound McCann over to keep the peace for £750.

“Let that be at the back of your mind because if you do, you will lose 750 quid,” the judge warned. “You have two instances of this kind on your record, you will not get a third.”
