JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – In one county in the east, taught a CPR course took place specifically for pet lovers.
Pet professionals gathered at Performance Dog Supply on Sunday in Jacksonville to learn techniques to help dogs and cats in time of need. The course is a five hour class by a company known as Pet Tech and instructed by Nicole Quickly.
“I have done CPR compressions,” said Alexandria Russell, a pet sitter in Jacksonville. “I have learned how to take the tongue out, close the mouth airtight and breathe into the dog or cat’s nose.”
Russell says she’s been pet sitting for a while now, and really enjoys it. She says the most amount of animals she has taken of is 10 cats total.
“I do it pretty often,” said Russell. “I have also cared for three houses at once, so it is definitely an experience.”
Quickle says the important lesson in the course is a technique called ‘Snout-to-Tail.’ The technique is a way for pet owners and professionals to check the health of their four-legged friend regularly. She says owners should be doing this every two weeks.
“Just touching your pet all over,” said Quickle. “Not just petting them at home, but touching every inch of their whole body.”
Katie Ivancevich is a pet owner of a sport dog, who she says inspired her to take this course. She says now that she completed the course, she will be able to help her dog and others in need.
“If there’s ever a situation where I see someone and their dog is struggling,” said Ivancevich. “I will have the knowledge to step in and help.”
After the nearly 15 participants completed the class today, they will be pet CPR certified until 2026. If you are interested in learning how to care for your pet in case of emergency, click to the Facebook Page.
