TUCSON, Ariz. – More than 70 dogs displaced by the Los Angeles wildfires have arrived in Tucson. This effort aims to support pets affected by the California wildfires.
The dogs were transported to Southern Arizona as Los Angeles continues to manage the impact of the fires. The Pima Animal Care Center, the Arizona Humane Society, and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona collaborated to bring these dogs to Tucson.
The dogs were already in the shelter system before the fires began, and their transfer helped free up kennel space in Los Angeles for pets displaced by the wildfires. The transportation was supported by Petco Love, Wings of Rescue, and Central Pet. Steve Kozachik, interim director of the Pima Animal Care Center, discussed the importance of this rescue effort. “We recognize that the shelter community is a relationship-building community, and there will be a day when we will have to reach back out to people in L.A. or other shelters in the Southwest and say, ‘Can you help us out?' We're in a tough situation here, and they're in a worse situation there, so we wanted to step up and help them out,” Kozachik said.
For those interested in adopting a dog from this rescue, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona still has many dogs looking for a forever home.
