When most people think of a working dog, they often picture a large, strong pooch that isn’t afraid of conflict. A round, wiggly puppy is the opposite of what you’d expect. Yet, Ukrainian soldiers have added some unique members to their team amid the Russian invasion.

The soldiers publicly introduced two tiny puppies, each with a unique backstory. Even though the puppies can’t walk far or put up a fight, they’ve been helpful in other ways. According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, these tiny pups can predict Russian attacks and warn the humans they trust.

A Puppy with a Special Name

The Kyiv police added a German Shepherd puppy to their team. His name is Bayraktar, after the Turkish Bayraktar drone that has been a successful tool against Russian troops.

“A puppy named Bayraktar is now working at the Kyiv Region Police Dog Training Center,” the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry wrote on Twitter. “He senses the approach of the enemy and starts to bark, warning of the danger of the explosions.”

Bayraktar was born in the Police Canine Center only a few months before the war. Despite being so tiny, police claim he can predict enemy attacks. Every time Ukraine has a small victory, they like to joke that Bayraktar played a big role.

In addition to a puppy named Bayraktar, Ukraine’s defense is also ordering more Bayraktar drones to protect them from Russian troops.

Second Puppy Rescued After Abandonment

Bayraktar is extremely adorable, but he’s not the only puppy helping out amid these horrifying times. Rambo was an abandoned puppy that a Ukrainian soldier found during the war. He was freezing, so the soldier decided to adopt him. Now, the puppy is a loyal protector in Ukraine.

“We felt sorry for him. It was freezing outside,” a soldier said. “We took him into our post, and he stayed with us.”

Rambo still has plenty of growing to do, but he’s already braver than many adult dogs. He can hear people approaching before his humans can, so he will warn the soldiers if he suspects danger. He also acts as a therapy dog for the soldiers who are facing intense pressure amid the invasion.

Dogs don’t have to be powerful to protect their humans. Bayraktar and Rambo prove that even the tiniest puppies can make a difference if they have enough determination. Love from the soldiers has helped these pups become the brave canines they are today.
