FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) – According to Underdog Animal Rescue and Rehab, at least 500,000 stray animals are in the Navajo Reservation.
Due to lack of water, food, injuries, and harsh elements, the average life expectancy of a Reservation Dog is 2 years.
The Moab, Utah-based nonprofit seeks to work with reservation communities by providing transportation, veterinary care, wellness clinics, and foster and adoption services for these animals.
“Our ultimate goal is that every animal on the reservation has a safe home and that they are fed and cared for”, says Ashley Park, Events Coordinator for the Western Slope – Underdog Rescue.
Through partnerships with various pet stores and breweries in Mesa County, Underdog Rescue holds monthly adoption events.
“This is my favorite part of the job”, says Park.
“This is why we do what we do. To take these dogs from likely not living past their second birthday to now they have found their perfect forever home.”
According to Park, adopting is not the only way to help the underdog, as anyone can volunteer and foster.
