Rex cats are a unique and fascinating breed that captivates many with their distinctive curly fur and charming personalities. Whether you’re a seasoned cat enthusiast or considering adding a new feline companion to your home, understanding the intricacies of Rex cats is essential.

WebMD states that various cat breeds have “rex” in their names, denoting their crimped or curly coats, distinct from straight-haired breeds. These cats may require specific care for their unique fur and skin. From their origins to their care requirements, here’s everything you need to know about these delightful creatures.

Origins and History of Rex Cats

The term “Rex” refers to a genetic mutation that affects the texture of a cat’s fur, resulting in a soft, curly, or wavy coat. This mutation can occur in various cat breeds, leading to different types of Rex cats, such as Devon Rex, Cornish Rex, and Selkirk Rex.

The Devon Rex is believed to have originated in Devonshire, England, during the 1960s, when a stray cat named Kirlee gave birth to a curly-coated kitten named Kirlee. Breeders noticed Kirlee’s unique coat and selectively bred cats, establishing the Devon Rex breed. The Cornish Rex breed originated in Cornwall, England, in the 1950s when a barn cat gave birth to Kallibunker. Breeders also seized upon this genetic anomaly and developed the Cornish Rex breed.

In contrast, the Selkirk Rex has a more recent origin, dating back to 1987 in Montana, USA. The breed resulted from a curly-coated kitten born to a Persian cat named Miss DePesto. Unlike the Devon and Cornish Rex breeds, which have slender, lightweight bodies, the Selkirk Rex has a more robust build, owing to its Persian ancestry.

Physical Characteristics of Rex Cats

Rex cats are distinguished by their unique coat texture, which sets them apart from other breeds. Their fur is short, soft, and curly, with individual hairs often forming tight spirals or waves. This curly coat lacks the typical guard hairs found in most cats, giving Rex cats a plush, velvety appearance.

Aside from their distinctive coat, these cats exhibit various physical characteristics that vary depending on the breed. Devon Rex cats have large ears, almond-shaped eyes, and pixie-like faces; Cornish Rex cats have slender bodies and arched backs. Selkirk Rex cats, on the other hand, have round faces, sturdy bodies, and dense, curly coats.

Temperament and Personality

People admire Rex cats for their playful, affectionate, and outgoing personalities. People often describe them as social butterflies, loving interacting with humans and other pets. Rex cats adore attention, cuddling, and snuggling with their owners.

These cats are naturally intelligent and curious, making them adept problem solvers and quick learners. These cats love playing and often show off their acrobatic skills, performing impressive feats of agility and athleticism during interactive playtime.

Care Requirements

Despite their unique coat, these cats are relatively low-maintenance in grooming. Their short, curly fur requires minimal brushing to prevent matting and tangling. A weekly combing with a soft brush or grooming glove is usually sufficient to keep their coat in good condition.

Sometimes, Rex cats might need a bath now and then to wash away extra oil and dirt from their skin and fur. It’s important to use a gentle shampoo made for cats and rinse them well to avoid irritating their skin.

Regarding health, such cats are usually strong and healthy with few genetic health problems. But just like any other cat, they need regular vet visits, shots, and protection from parasites to stay healthy and happy.

Rex cats are charming and lovable pets adored by cat lovers everywhere. With their curly fur and loving nature, they quickly become lovable members of any home. Whether you prefer the stylish Cornish Rex, the playful Devon Rex, or the cuddly Selkirk Rex, one thing is clear – These pets are guaranteed to bring happiness, friendship, and lots of fun into your home.
