Since the pandemic, the veterinary market has surged alongside an increase in pet ownership. As reported in a recent study in the U.S., 66% of the population owns a pet, and if we compound U.S., EU and China cat and dog owners, the numbers reaches almost half a billion pet owners.

Such a surge in ownership poses pressure on the system, where there is already a shortage of veterinarians. The rising demand for pet care signals market growth but also prompts a need to adopt new practices that can help enhance professional veterinarians' ability to provide proper care efficiently and competitively.

I believe that digitalization and AI are key technologies that can help tackle these systemic issues, helping to optimize the way veterinarians work and improve the quality of their care.

AI Adoption By The Larger Business Sector

Several industries have already started adopting AI in their processes, driving more automation and efficiency. In the software development sector, for instance, tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly utilized to improve the way developers work. Instead of starting from a blank sheet, developers can ask for suggestions and build on an already solid base.

A McKinsey study reports that coding generation activity can be up to 45% faster. Another report by McKinsey, from back in 2017, highlights how technology can result in productivity increases of 18% to 30%.

Applications Within The Veterinarian Field

As someone who leads a company that offers AI tools for veterinarians, I'd like to focus on four key areas that those in the field can use to drive better work organization.

1. Diagnostic

Unfortunately it's not possible for every clinic to have experts from every field within the team. Thus when it comes to diagnosing cases, many times a consultation is needed from other leaders. This means moving out of the room and maybe calling a colleague or a third party for a consultation.

When seeking outside consultation through AI, it's crucial to customize your AI-assisted diagnostics to suit your particular needs. This involves crafting specialized agents adept at offering real-time assistance, equipped to process data and engage in dialogue with your veterinarians effectively. You can take inspiration from what happens in the coding industry and the way that coders leverage AI to create a codebase, which then allows them to further develop the product more effectively and quickly.

2. Workflow Automation

While making their rounds, veterinarians execute many tasks. These are later reflected in the report they provide to pet owners. I've found that each report preparation can last up to 30 minutes.

With their time-consuming and routine nature, I think this is one of the most important aspects to consider when introducing AI. For example, using AI to facilitate transcription can help improve veterinarian workflow by eliminating the need to take notes—summarizing them and avoiding the loss of information.

When getting started, whether you are the owner of a small clinic or the manager of a large veterinary hospital, I recommend beginning with a diagnostic support tool, such as an AI assistant. From here, you can build and branch into other uses of AI to improve your team's work and your facility's profitability.

3. Digitalization

Specifically, I believe that AI-powered practice management systems (PMS) are a key to digitalizing the clinic workflow. These systems keep track of data including full medical histories of pets from previous examinations. The possibility to make advanced statistics on data and forecasting the evolution of parameters (like blood parameters) are features that can dramatically improve the way veterinarians perform their assessments.

To improve your PMS, start by checking the latest releases from your provider or inquire about their plans to incorporate AI into these systems. Share your specific needs to get tailored suggestions. We're still at the beginning of digitalization, but I believe a smart implementation of AI within management systems has the promise to greatly improve pet care.

As AI continues to evolve, I predict it will become one of the most pervasive technologies to date, integrated within almost all industries. Therefore, veterinarians and industry leaders should stay informed about the latest tech trends by utilizing AI-specific training and online courses.

4. Predictive Technologies

As reported in one study, predictive medicine is a major trend in veterinary practices for its promise to help develop lifelong health plans for animals. When using data analytics to assess the correlations between parameters that a veterinarian may miss, I recommend incorporating not only the interaction of physiological data but also environmental information, food information and interaction with humans. All of this allows the adoption of the so-called “one-health approach.”

Train your AI models to provide real-time health status assessments that practitioners can seamlessly integrate into their workflow. These algorithms can offer valuable insights, such as suggesting adjustments to nutrition programs, which can then be fine-tuned by a professional. Again, it is still important for veterinarians to evaluate and translate these reports in order to properly diagnose and educate owners on how to better manage their pets' lives.

An Objective Approach To Technology

Is AI going to replace all veterinarians? Definitively not. However, I believe this technology will become more and more part of common practice, changing the way workflows are set up.

Is AI the one-size-fits-all solution? Again, no. AI has great potential but should be used with a conscious and critical mindset. LLMs are powerful, but they also have limitations, like the famous “hallucination” cases in which the output provided is false or misleading.

We must understand the technology and its limitations to fully take advantage of it. The European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE) highlights the challenge of integrating specific courses on AI and digitalization to enhance veterinary practice.

Overall, I see AI as the right arm for veterinarians—a powerful tool that is not here to replace but rather augment their capabilities to improve pet care and business operations.
