When Bean first came into Carrie’s life, the odds were stacked against him. Carrie, a medical foster for Suncoast Animal League, was told the little pup likely wouldn’t live to see his first birthday. But Carrie was determined to give him the best life possible, no matter how much time they had together. Bean, surrendered by his breeder due to his extensive health issues, had nowhere else to go. But Carrie didn’t hesitate for a moment to take him in.
From the very beginning, Bean showed an incredible spirit. Despite his many medical challenges—hydrocephalus, scoliosis, spina bifida, shallow hip sockets, and daily seizure activity—Bean’s zest for life was undeniable. His physical differences, including a hump on his back, didn’t stop him from running, playing, and embracing each day with enthusiasm.
Carrie worked closely with a neurologist to ensure Bean’s quality of life was never compromised. “The last thing we would want is for him to suffer in any way,” she explained in the video below. With the help of medication for his hydrocephalus and support from his furry companion, Hugo, Bean has continued to thrive. Hugo, aware of Bean’s limitations, adjusts their play by pausing to let Bean catch up during their games of chase.
“People often look at dogs like Bean and think they’re not valuable,” Carrie said. “But animals like him teach us about compassion, kindness, love, empathy, and resilience.” Bean’s remarkable ability to connect with others led him to become a certified therapy dog, bringing joy to patients in hospitals and children in schools. “He’s just the best representative of love,” Carrie shared.
Bean’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. In September, he faced a life-threatening medical crisis, but against all odds, he pulled through. “He came through that surgery and is just as sassy and silly as before,” Carrie said. Now, having recently celebrated his second birthday, Bean continues to defy expectations and inspire everyone around him.
