Vet reveals how often you should walk your dog and it depends on the breed


Dr. Nicole Rous has shared a helpful guide in a TikTok video to clarify the best exercise routine for your dog based on breed and age.

Figuring out just the right walk routine for your furry friend can be a head-scratcher for some pet parents.

Luckily, veterinarian Dr. Nicole Rous has unleashed some hot tips on TikTok, detailing a dog-walking guide tailored to different dog ages and breeds.

Dr. Rous prescribed different doses of daily walks depending on the dog's age bracket; puppies should walk for five minutes per month of age twice a day. In other words, if you've got a four-month-old bundle of joy, they need 20 minutes of moving about two times a day.

Remember, this includes frolicking in the backyard and other fun-filled adventures, reported the Express.

For full-grown dogs, Dr. Rous advised aiming for 30 to a whole hour of exercise each day, though it depends on what type of dog you've got at home.

Dr. Nicole Rous pointed out: “If you've got a really active breed like a border collie, you're probably looking at one to two hours.

“And if you've got a more sedentary breed, you might be looking at two 20 minute walks a day rather than the full hour.”

When it comes to older dogs, Dr. Rous said to stick to 30 to 60 minutes – but make sure the workouts are gentle on their aging joints with low-stress strolls only.

She also tossed in a pro-tip: “Look at the surface you're walking on and then consider things like hydrotherapy.”

“That's really good exercise for the oldies to include in their regime but the exercise is so, so important to keep going even if they have arthritis,” she continued.

“We want consistent exercise and we want to make sure we're still using their brain because that's so important just as it is for humans,” she concluded.
