JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – One Jonesboro vet gives tips on keeping your fur babies safe amid the summer heat.

As temperatures rise, overheating becomes a major concern for at-home pets.

Dr. Archie Ryan is a veterinarian at Southwest Drive Animal Clinic. He said the heat and humidity play a factor in an animal’s ability to breathe.

Every animal needs to have plenty of water, both inside and outside. Access to shade and air conditioning will lower an animal’s risk of overheating.

Ryan said owners of pugs, bulldogs, and Pekingese need to be aware that these breeds are the most at risk due to their flat noses.

“Any dog that can’t breathe through its nose is susceptible to overheating a lot faster,” Ryan said. “Because dogs evaporate water from their tongue to cool themselves and also water from their airway.”

Ryan said cats handle themselves well no matter the temperature, but dogs are different. He said they take in most of the heat through their feet.

He said as you walk your dogs, look for cooler surfaces they can walk on including grass, dirt, or shaded areas rather than asphalt.

“When you have the opportunity to walk them through a puddle or into the lake, take that opportunity so they can cool down and get a quick drink,” Ryan said.

When it comes to livestock, Ryan said fans and misters are the best tools to stop your farm animals from overheating.
