A New Year’s Day rescue at Clover Point turned into a heartwarming tale after VicPD officers responded to reports of a dog stranded on a small rock in the ocean.
Upon arrival, VicPD officers spotted a Corgi perched approximately 15 metres from the shore on a rock barely emerging from the rising tide.
Knowing Corgis are not known for their swimming prowess, officers suspected that the dog ventured into the water on her own, likely startled by New Year’s Eve fireworks.
As the tide continued to rise, the resourceful pup, named Buckets, swam to the officers onshore. A quick check of her collar revealed her name and her owner’s phone number.
Buckets was taken to VicPD headquarters, where she spent a few hours drying off and charming officers with her cheerful demeanor before her relieved family arrived to bring her home.

According to her owners, Buckets had bolted during the chaos of New Year’s Eve fireworks. In the darkness, she ran onto the rocks and became stranded as the tide came in. Her family spent the night searching for her, not knowing she was enduring a perilous situation by the water.
The emotional reunion between Buckets and her family marked a joyful start to 2025, underscoring the strong bond between pets and their owners—and reminding us of the lengths first responders will go to ensure the safety of all residents, four-legged or otherwise.
