DALLAS — Looking for a new pet? Now might be the time. Dallas Animal Services (DAS) said Thursday it's at 130% capacity for dogs and 96% for cats.
Large breed dogs and adult cats make up the majority of the population, according to DAS. So to help new pet owners who adopt, DAS is offering the first 100 adopters who take in a dog over 30 pounds or a cat six months or older from the shelter a $50 Petco gift card to buy supplies for their new pet Friday through Sunday.
“We are encouraging those who wish to add a pet to their family to choose adoption,” said DAS Interim Director Paul Ramon. “DAS has seen the lifesaving power of the Dallas community time and time again, and we need their help now. We are grateful to FODAS for helping us support our adopters with a gift card for pet supplies to set their new pet up for success.”
Anyone interested in fostering is asked to come by Dallas Animal Services at 1818 N. Westmoreland Road from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, or from 1 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.
As part of its #BeDallas90 campaign, Dallas Animal Services is aiming to reach a 90% live release rate. In April 2024, DAS said the live release rate was 84% for dogs and cats.
