Many pets go missing at this time of the year due to fireworks and bangers.

With just over two weeks to go until Halloween, we're being reminded to take care of our furry friends.

While we might like heading out trick or treating, or watching bright fireworks displays – spare a thought for our cats and dogs.

Many of them are terrified by the bright lights and bangs, and are left cowering under our kitchen tables.

Denise McCausland is ISPCA's National Head of Animal Welfare, and explains how we can keep our animals safe and happy this Halloween:

“For dogs and cats, we bring them indoors and we don't let them out in these timeframes,” she said.

“We keep them in, we provide little safe dens for them, somewhere you can put a blanket over and calm them down.

“We also suggest that you put some music, or background sound to just drown out the noise outside.”

The ISPCA is also warning us to be aware of the dangers that our Halloween treats can also pose to our pets including chocolate, sweeteners like Xylitol and grapes and raisins.

Denise tells us what to watch out for.

“It can actually cause some serious liver damage if consumed in large quantities especially, but the key thing is to try and keep them away from your pet in the first place, and avoid that.

“If something does happen, ring your vet immediately.

“Grapes and raisins and currants are all things that can cause issues as well.

“It can be something as simple as diarrhea or vomiting but it can also lead to fairly significant health implications.”
