SPOKANE, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Agriculture has issued a warning about the risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in cats. The department emphasizes that domestic, captive, and wild cats are particularly sensitive to this virus.
Cases of HPAI have been reported in domestic cats that consumed contaminated raw milk or raw pet food in other states. While Washington dairies have tested negative for the virus so far, authorities stress the importance of remaining vigilant.
Pet owners can protect their cats by avoiding feeding them raw milk and raw food. Additionally, it is advised to keep cats away from potentially infected wildlife to reduce the risk of infection.
