Not for nothing was she once the most powerful female presenter on TV as she reigned supreme at the helm of That’s Life, a programme she co-wrote, presented and which at times attracted audiences of more than 20 million, received up to 15,000 letters a week and ran for 21 years.

It was nothing short of a phenomenon, combining humour and satire with exposés and campaigns – and even featuring a talking dog that could say “sausages.”.

But Dame Esther has saved her final campaign for what is also her last – to get a free vote in parliament on the complex issue of assisted dying.

t’s hardly surprising the 83 year-old broadcasting veteran is facing up to the harsh reality of her impending death with trademark grit and resolve.

She has joined the Swiss group Dignitas which, for prices starting at around £6,000, offers assisted suicide to members.

It’s crucial to stress that you have to join Dignitas a long time prior to your
condition deteriorating.

It’s not something you can do when you think the day is drawing nigh.

She revealed she had stage four cancer earlier this year and didn’t think she’d survive to her birthday in June. Now, thanks to medication, she is looking forward to a quiet Christmas surrounded by her children and grandchildren, but fears it will be her last.

Hence her decision: “I have joined Dignitas. I thought if the next scan says nothing’s working I might buzz off to Zurich. I don’t want my family’s last memories of me to be painful.”

She was being typically plain-speaking and matter of fact, and was also right.

Consider this: we don’t allow our beloved pets to endure intolerable pain and agony and sob as we agree to “have them put to sleep.” I know. I’ve done it for a much cherished dog and a cat (both of whom were in their late teens!) as their suffering from terminal conditions was too distressing to bear.

I wept before, during and after – but know it was right to relieve the pain.

Another doughty Dame, Diana Rigg, made the same point prior to her death in 2020 aged 82, after a secret six-month battle with cancer. In messages taped by her daughter, Dame Diana said: “They don’t talk about how awful, how truly awful the details of this condition are…it’s high time they did. And it is high time there was some movement in the law to give choice to people in my position.”

Assisted suicide is banned and can carry a prison sentence of up to 14 years, which given the sentences handed out for other crimes, is ludicrous.

One caller to my show told me he had to say farewell to his mother as she left for the Swiss clinic by the front door of her house.

As a police officer at the time, even opening the gate, calling a taxi or carrying her bags could have been deemed “assisting” and possibly wrecked his career.

Safeguards can easily be put in place such as satisfying a number of clinicians you are competent to proceed.

This has been available in countries such as Switzerland and there’s been no epidemic of elderly folk being “bumped off” by avaricious relatives.

Or do you really want to stay with a system that allows your pet a better and more tranquil death than it does you?
