Summer Pets is a video series where vet Dr Katrina Warren shares her tips and tricks for keeping dogs happy and healthy during the season.

This article was produced in association with Kurgo.

Ensuring your dog stays hydrated is crucial for their well-being.

Hot weather increases water loss through panting and without adequate water consumption or when combined with exercise in the heat, it can quickly result in dehydration.

Signs of dehydration include dry gums or nose, lethargy, panting excessively and loss of skin elasticity.

To test for loss of skin elasticity, pinch the skin on your dog's neck; if it doesn't snap back quickly, your dog might be dehydrated.

Tips and hacks to help keep your dog hydrated

1. Provide fresh, cool water at all times and change it frequently

Use stainless steel or ceramic bowls to keep water cooler longer and make sure bowls are shaded all day and can't tip over.

2. Encourage drinking

If you think your dog isn't drinking enough, try adding la little low-sodium chicken or bone broth to the bowl for added flavour.

3. Incorporate hydrating treats

Give your dog some frozen dog-safe fruits like watermelon (seedless), cucumber slices or specially made ice cubes with dog-safe ingredients like bone broth (without onion).

4. Invest in a portable water bottle

Take these with you and offer regular water breaks during walks, hikes, or playtime at the park.

5. Offer wet food or broth-soaked kibble

Switching to wet dog food or soaking kibble in water or broth can help increase your dog's water intake, especially for picky drinkers.

6.  Add ice cubes to water bowl

Dropping a few ice cubes into their water bowl can help keep it cool.

7. Use a pet fountain

Many dogs are attracted to running water. A pet fountain can make drinking water more fun and encourage them to drink more.
