Wellesley firefighters crawled over thin ice on Lake Waban Sunday to rescue a dog and its owner who had fallen into the freezing water, according to police.
Firefighters responded to the lake for a report that a dog fell through the ice at 4:44 p.m., according to a statement released by the Wellesley Police Department.
A second call came in, reporting that the dog’s owner fell through the ice attempting to rescue the dog, whose name is Tommy, according to the statement.
Video from a drone sent in support of the rescue effort by Wellesley police captured the rescue.
It shows a team of four firefighters working to get both the owner and dog out of the water.
They first rescued the owner, who had been in the water for approximately 12-15 minutes, the statement said. Dressed in cold water survival suits, two firefighters went onto the ice, pulled the dog owner out of the water, and helped them to crawl back to shore, police said.
The firefighters returned to the water to rescue “Tommy” the dog, who was even further from shore than the owner, the statement said.
A firefighter swam out to where the dog was struggling to stay afloat. The two were then helped to shore by other firefighters, the video shows.
The owner was transported to Newton Wellesley Hospital. The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic and treated for hypothermia. Both were evaluated and are expected to be okay, the statement said.
Police urge dog owners to keep their pets on a leash when walking near bodies of water near the winter months. In the event that a dog does fall through ice, people should call 911 and keep watch of the dog from land, the statement said.
