The West Midlands was named the fastest-growing area in the country for pet theft.

After 19 reported cases in 2019, the number increased to 83 thefts in 2024.

The findings mark a 277% increase over five years, making the region a particularly dangerous area for pet owners.

A high-profile case occurred in March when two-year-old Boston terrier Skye was taken from a pub car park in March.

Following an appeal. the dog was later returned to her Bartley Green home.

The findings were conducted by home security provider ADT, who issued Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to police forces across the country.

Whilst the West Midlands is the fastest-growing region for pet robbery, it only just made the top five areas overall.

Dorset was named the number one region in the country for pet thefts with 696 reported cases.

Despite having the highest number of thefts overall, Dorset saw a drop from 913 thefts in 2019 to 696 in 2024.

West Yorkshire finished in second with 208 whilst South Yorkshire made third with 127 incidents.

Dogs were the most frequently stolen pet in the findings with 539 cases reported last year.

Birds were just behind in the findings with 409 cases of theft whilst there were 255 cases of cat thefts.

ADT UK Subscriber general manager Michele Bennett said: “Pet theft in the UK has become increasingly concerning, mainly as pets are often considered valuable family members.

“The pet theft can be attributed to several factors, including the increased demand for specific breeds, which can command high prices on the black market.

“This demand was exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic, which saw a surge in pet ownership as people sought companionship during lockdowns.

“However, the government has taken steps to address these concerns. For instance, introducing compulsory microchipping for dogs has been a significant step in deterring theft and aiding in recovering stolen pets.”
