Every spring, dog lovers across West Texas look forward to celebrating their four-legged friends, especially at the Abilene Kennel Club's annual Dog Show. The 2025 event is set for May 16-18, and while hundreds of breeds will take the spotlight, some are especially near and dear to West Texans.

As someone who spent years raising Golden Retrievers for the Foundation for the Blind and being part of both the American and Abilene Kennel Clubs, I always get excited when new “Top Dog” lists are released. This year, Dogster.com published the updated rankings based on popularity across the Lone Star State, and it's clear that in West Texas, we love dogs who are more than family. #10 – Beagle: Small but mighty with a nose for adventure. Beagles are loyal companions and fantastic hunting dogs.
#9 – Australian Shepherd: Known as the “cowboy's herding dog,” Aussies are energetic, smart, and love ranch life.
#8 – Chihuahua: Don't let their size fool you. These tiny dynamos have big personalities and big hearts.
#7 – Rottweiler: Strong, protective, and devoted, Rottweilers are popular as both guardians and loyal family pets.
#6 – Yorkshire Terrier: The feisty Yorkies may be small, but they're full of sass and heart, a surprising favorite across West Texas homes.
#5 – Golden Retriever: My personal favorite! Goldens are sweet, smart, and lovable, perfect family dogs and loyal workers.
#4 – German Shepherd: Highly intelligent and courageous, German Shepherds are a go-to for families, ranchers, and law enforcement alike.
#3 – Labrador Retriever: Still a classic favorite, Labs are energetic, friendly, and love helping out around the ranch or playing in the backyard.
#2 – French Bulldog: Compact, charming, and easygoing, Frenchies have become one of the fastest-growing favorites across the country, and West Texas is no exception.
#1 – Blue Lacy: Texas' official state dog takes the top spot! Hardworking, loyal, and tough as a West Texas summer, the Blue Lacy is the ultimate ranch hand and is beloved by many across the region.
