Who worked together to save a stray pregnant dog from a rural field

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – It took a village to make this success story happen.

People started sending in sightings of a very pregnant stray dog to the Leigh’s Lost and Found page back in June and it took a lot of people and persistence to get her to safety.

A dogged dog trapper teamed up with the caring people of C.A.R.E. to make it happen.

Annie Burk with C.A.R.E. says, “we were able to take Freya in because we had a dedicated staff member who was ready to welcome her into her own home for a rehabilitation period.”

Freya was spotted in a hot field at highways 60 and 65 and wouldn’t come to anyone.

Brittany Scherff with Emergency Rescue Consultancy, put in many days setting out food for Freya to gain her trust.

Brittany tells us, “she wouldn’t eat if I watched her but as soon as I started walking away, she’d come up and eat real fast.”

Finally, Freya got close enough for Brittany to snare her and lead her to her van.

“I sat with her for awhile to get her calmed down and then slowly walked over and gave her some pets. She was friendly so I was like okay, let’s go! And she just hopped right in the van like she knew what we were doing.”

Then it was C.A.R.E.’s turn to take over and they had a big job to clean Freya up.

Annie says, “fleas, ticks, dirt, mud. I think she did 4 baths night one. That was her first bonding experience with her new family.”

After a couple of months with them, Freya then found a forever family to spoil her rotten for the rest of her days.

Annie tells us, “her dad’s a chef so she’s sitting at home, eating steak. So she went from street dog to a chef’s baby. We’re for sure she’s in the perfect forever home.”
