Why you should insure your property against pet damage

The money-saving expert Martin Lewis recently reminded us on Twitter/X that if a dog causes damage to property, its owner is liable. He advised dog owners to check that their pet insurance cover has third-party cover (he also noted that “you’re not usually liable for a cat’s behaviour”).

Pet damage at home is a grey area. Some owners assume, often incorrectly, that they’re covered by their home insurance, but plenty have no idea — research by the insurance company Saga found that 41 per cent of Britons were unsure if their home insurance policy covered damage by pets.

There is, however, a good chance you may already be protected in case of pet damage under personal liability cover, which is typically included in your home
