WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – The City of Wichita Falls Animal Services has shared tips to keep your pets safe during Halloween.
Between cats and dogs, WF Animal Services shared that taking extra steps can help your pet feel more comfortable as the celebrations begin:
- Keep candy out of reach of pets
- WF Animal Services said many sweet treats can be toxic to cats and dogs. If you think your pet has ingested something toxic, you are advised to call your local veterinarian or call the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435.
- Avoid decorations that could be dangerous.
- Decorations like jack-o-lanterns, dry ice, and open flames can harm pets if they are to come into contact with them.
- Make sure costumes are comfortable for your pets.
- Make sure your pet can move, breathe, and see properly in any costumes you may decide to put them in for the holiday.
- Make sure your pet wears a collar with identification.
- If your pet escapes during the holiday, having proper identification can help get your pet back home quicker.
- Keep indoor pets away from doors.
- As holiday celebrations begin, pets can become stressed by the commotion and may flee outside.
- Watch out for your outdoor pets throughout the night.
- Pets are sometimes the victim of pranks, especially black cats, who are associated with the holiday. Keep an eye out for them and that they are safe.
WF Animal Services said your pets rely on you for protection and keeping them safe is your responsibility.
