CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — As 298 dogs and cats await new homes at the Anti-Cruelty Society, the nonprofit has announced that it will waive all adoption fees during its Home for the Howlidays campaign, which runs through the month of December.
In the light of overcrowding at shelters across the state, Gov. J.B. Pritzker visited the shelter on Wednesday and officially proclaimed this week as Dog and Cat Adoption Week in Illinois.
“As we move into the holiday season, I encourage every Illinoisan to consider welcoming a new best friend into your home,” Pritzker said. “They need you, and I can guarantee that you won’t be sorry — in fact, you probably need them, too.”
To those thinking about adding a new furry family member, Anti-Cruelty Society CEO and President Tracy Elliot said now is the time.
“As we speak right now, there are 298 animals in our care, and just like all of the shelters and rescues in the Chicago region and, frankly, all over the country, we are in great need of adopters and fosters,” Elliot said.
Adoptable dogs and cats in your area can be found on the Anti-Cruelty Society’s website.
The organization is remodeling its cat wing and will likely cut the ribbon on the new space come February.
Also in 2024, the Anti-Cruelty Society will celebrate 125 years in Chicago.
