Major increase in dog bite incidents in India as a surge of 26.5% has reported by Health Ministry.
A woman from Hyderabad was attacked by a pack of 15-20 stray dogs during her morning walk on Sunday, June 23. The incident was captured in a video shared by the news agency ANI. The victim whose name is Rajeshwari sustained minor injuries from the attack.
Rajeshwari recounted her experience, explaining that the attack began when she encountered two dogs between the 3rd and 4th blocks of her walk. As she tried to walk away, one of the dogs barked, summoning a larger pack that surrounded and attacked her. Despite her efforts to scare them off, she fell, and the dogs continued their assault. Rajeshwari expressed concern that if it had been a child in her place, the outcome could have been fatal. She credited her ability to manage the situation to her experience with her two pet dogs at home.

This incident is not isolated. Over a month ago, a tragic event occurred in Vikarabad, Telangana, where a stray dog killed a five-month-old infant. The dog entered the house while the baby was asleep and inflicted severe injuries, consuming parts of the infant’s body.
In response to the rising number of dog attacks, the central government issued a directive in March 2024, asking several states to ban the sale and breeding of 23 aggressive dog breeds, including Pitbull Terriers, American Bulldogs, Rottweilers, and Mastiffs.
A report from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, released in December 2023, highlighted a significant increase in dog bite incidents, which surged by 26.5% from 2022 to 2023.
In May 2024, two separate dog attack incidents gained media attention. In Noida, a video went viral showing a teenage girl being bitten on the arm by a dog inside an elevator. In another incident in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, a girl was attacked by a German Shepherd while riding her bicycle. The dog, held on a leash by its owner, managed to bite the girl.
These events underscore the growing concern over stray and aggressive dog attacks in India, prompting calls for stricter regulations and better management of stray dog populations.
