NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman said she is refusing to lock her cats up because her best friend's boyfriend is allergic to them
  • “It seems unreasonable to request that from me,” the pet owner wrote in a post on Reddit
  • The woman said her friend's significant other “has never complained” about her cats the other times he has been at her home

A woman is refusing to lock her cats up because her best friend's boyfriend — whom she “can't stand” — is allergic to them.

In a post on Reddit's “Am I the A——” forum, the woman wrote that she is hosting “a small cookout” at her place, but she isn't thrilled about inviting her best friend's boyfriend, as she said, “All he does is make rude, snarky comments and complains about everything everywhere he goes. Nothing is ever good enough. Or nothing is ever as good as his stuff.”

Further explaining that her friend's significant other “has made comments” about the “location and quality” of her residence “many times before,” the woman said she still opted to invite him to the gathering when she sent an invitation to her best friend.

However, the Reddit user said her friend “is worried about her boyfriend’s cat allergies.” And though she explained, “I have two cats. Both hide when people are over,” the woman wrote that her friend “asked me to lock them in the room for the day to not upset his allergies.”

The woman also pointed out that the boyfriend “has been to my house twice now and has never complained about my cats.”

Keeping these factors in mind, the woman wrote of her response to her best friend, “I simply told her no.”

But, after the woman said her friend “persisted,” she continued, “I reminded her [that her boyfriend's] been around [the cats] and their fur, which lingers around at all times in the past.”

The woman said she even asked her best friend what her boyfriend does to “manage” his allergies. When the friend explained he will take mediciation, the woman said she “recommend he take it again before/after his visit.”

Still, “she persisted,” the pet owner wrote, “So I said I’m not locking my cats in a room for the day. And so far that’s been that.”

The woman ended her post asking if she was in the wrong. Pointing out, “I’m not sure if my dislike of her boyfriend is clouding my judgment,” she continued, “I also think of how panicked and uncomfortable my cats will be, and it seems unreasonable to request that from me. Also, their discomfort really doesn’t seem worth his company.”

In the comments section, various other Reddit users sided with the woman for putting her cats above the best friend's boyfriend.

“My cats hid when people come over too, but regardless, I would NEVER lock them into a room that's their home, and I would never force them to stay in one room unless they wanted to,” one user wrote. “You're having a cookout, tell him to stay outside,” said another.

Added one more user: “The real issue is not the cats, but why you're letting the rude guy come to your party.”

One more Redditor, meanwhile, couldn't help but poke fun at the situation, writing, “Easier to lock the boyfriend in his room for the day. At least the cats are cute.”
