A social worker, Sheela Shah, had lodged an FIR against two women — Nandini Balekar and Pallavi Patil. No arrest has been made so far.
While Balekar has been accused of feeding chicken and fish to stray dogs and cats, Patil allegedly threatened and abused the complainant and others, states the complaint lodged at Gamdevi police station.
After complaints were received, a committee of two policemen and two veterinary officers from BMC was formed and Balekar was instructed not to feed meat to stray animals on the road and near the temple. When she ignored this, an FIR was registered.
The police said that the complainant alleges that Balekar would deliberately feed meat to stray animals on the roads where devotees coming to the temple for darshan would stand in queue.
The police said that Balekar was asked to feed animals at one place but she ignored it. The complainant told the police that Balekar would throw meat pieces on the road from where the devotees would go and the area would get impure. When Balekar did not listen, a police complaint was filed.
A committee formed to look into it decided Balekar would feed the stray animals at a fixed location after 10 pm. She was told not to give chicken or fish. She was told to feed dry food and pedigree. She was asked to keep the area clean but she didn’t do it. When some residents confronted her, she called Patil who allegedly threatened some people.
The two women have been booked under IPC sections for injuring or defiling place of worship and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting its religion or religious beliefs besides criminal intimidation.
