On a frosty December day, Beth and Michael, a compassionate and animal-loving couple, decided to embrace the spirit of the holiday season by giving back to their community. With hearts full of generosity and arms filled with supplies, they headed to Anne Arundel County Animal Control to donate much-needed items for the shelter animals. Their intention was straightforward: drop off the donations and leave. However, their visit took an unexpected turn when they encountered Rocky, an elderly dog who had spent many years in and out of the shelter.
Rocky, a 17-year-old dog, had seen better days. His age and health issues made him a less likely candidate for adoption, and it seemed he would spend his remaining years in the confines of a small kennel. However, Beth and Michael felt an instant connection to the sweet old dog. Beth recounted to Bored Panda:
“We were there to donate all kinds of stuff that I gathered with my military community, and when I saw Rocky walk in, I couldn’t stop thinking about his adorable old face. Next thing I know, I’m walking out with Rocky!”
Beth and Michael knew they couldn’t leave Rocky behind. They decided to give him a loving home, especially during the holiday season. Rocky arrived at their house just in time for Christmas, and the couple made sure his holiday was filled with warmth and joy.
Beth was deeply moved by Rocky’s plight and penned a heartfelt letter to her new furry family member, expressing her love and commitment to his care:
“I took you on knowing we would need to take extra care of you. Knowing that one day, you might not make it outside in time to use the restroom and I would have to clean it up, I knew one day I would have to carry you up the stairs when you no longer have the strength to do it. I knew you would eventually lose your hearing and eyesight, and we would have to spend extra money to make the house safer for you. I knew one day I would have to say goodbye to you. But until then, you are the best gift I have ever received, and I’m really sad I couldn’t give you the best 17 years you deserved, but I promise you’ll have a great life from now until the day I have to say goodbye!”
Rocky quickly adapted to his new home, where he was showered with love and attention. Beth and Michael provided everything Rocky needed to be comfortable and happy. They made sure he enjoyed special treats like doggy ice cream and gave him all the affection he had missed out on during his years in the shelter.
Rocky’s loyalty to his new parents was heartwarming. He followed Beth and Michael around the house, enjoying their company. He even took part in singing and dancing sessions with them, showing a playful side that belied his age. One of Rocky’s favorite activities was napping with his new mom, finding solace and comfort in her presence.
“Rocky may have had some tough years, but I promised him that however long he may be here, it will be filled with joy, love, and lots of treats,” Beth shared with Bored Panda. “He definitely completed our family, and we are more than happy to be his parents.”
As Rocky settled into his new life, Beth and Michael made sure every day was special. They took him on gentle walks, ensuring he could enjoy the outdoors without straining himself. They also created a safe and comfortable environment at home, accommodating his needs as he aged. Rocky’s health issues, including his declining hearing and eyesight, were met with patience and care, ensuring he felt secure and loved.
After a challenging time in the shelter, Rocky finally experienced the warmth of a loving home. Beth and Michael’s dedication to making his golden years comfortable and joyful was evident in every little thing they did for him. They showed him what it meant to be part of a family, giving him the affection and care he had longed for.
After a blissful year filled with love and happiness, Rocky peacefully passed away at 18 years old. Though his time with Beth and Michael was short, it was undoubtedly filled with joy and contentment. Rocky’s spirit and the love he brought into their lives left an indelible mark on their hearts.
Inspired by the joy of giving a senior dog a home, Beth and Michael decided to continue their mission of helping older dogs in need. They adopted another senior dog, Duchess, who quickly became a cherished member of the family. Duchess, a loving and gentle dog, fit right in and became a great big sister to Hazel and her little brother.
