3 dogs seized from Anoka County up for adoption at AHS

Dr. Brayshaw said the team at the Animal Humane Society has been treating the dogs for both physical and behavioral issues since they were rescued last month.

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Three more dogs that were seized from an Anoka County rescue last month are getting their second chance at life.

On Thursday, the Animal Humane Society (AHS) of Golden Valley said two of the dogs that were taken from the Anoka County organization on Oct. 20 when authorities executed a search warrant, are now on their adoption floor, while a third rescued pup is now available at the AHS in Coon Rapids.

Dr. Graham Brayshaw, director of veterinary medicine with AHS, spoke with KARE 11 ahead of the adoption floor opening Thursday morning.

“These can be pretty sad cases from the conditions they’re in, and its always nice to see pups on this end — on the adoption floor,” he said. “They’re a lot fatter, happier, as we’ve been able to care for them while they’ve been here.”

Brayshaw said the team at AHS has been treating the dogs for both physical and behavioral issues.

“It’s amazing to see how quickly dogs can make progress when you put them in the right situation,” he said.

Goldfish, Georgia and Glimmer are just three of a total 30 animals — 22 of which went to the AHS, while eight went straight to fosters — that were saved from the Anoka County animal organization and treated for things like respiratory and skin infections, while at the same time, began the process of conditioning them to be more comfortable interacting with other animals and people.

Brayshaw said the dogs were mostly kept in small crates and kennels at the Anoka County facility, which limited their social interactions. He added that behavioral issues usually take longer to remedy than the physical, but overall, the dogs are making “good progress” in AHS’ care. That’s why, he said, at least one of the pups has already been rehomed, queueing up the next in line to hit the adoption floor.

Goldfish and Georgia are available to adopt right now at the Golden Valley location, while you can find Glimmer in Coon Rapids. AHS also has a facility in Woodbury.

Brayshaw said those who aren’t looking to adopt, but still want to support animals in need, are invited to volunteer their time or contribute monetarily — not only with AHS, but with any animal rescue organization.

“Literally any animal you can adopt from us, from a shelter, saves that life, helps that animal, puts them in a great home and there’s always a next dog, a next cat, a next little critter that needs help,” he said. “You don’t only help that one animal, but you literally double that love — you free the space for the next one to come in.”
