Anyone needing to get their pet vaccinated for distemper or parvo can do so at a free clinic.
Cause 4Paws Gary will host the first of its bi-annual Access to Care Vaccine Clinics at The Beacon Light Church 3770 Burr Street, Gary from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 28. The nonprofit aims to “improve the quality of life for pet’s and people in underserved communities with affordable responsible pet ownership services to help reduce pet overpopulation, keeping the family pet in the home and building dog parks to strengthen the animal-human bond,” Founder and CEO Michelle Robinson said.
The clinic is open to all Indiana and Illinois pet owners.
Cause 4Paws got a grant from Maddie’s Fund to provide free heartworm testing at the event. The Petco Love Foundation will provide a free dog distemper and parvo vaccines as well as cat distemper vaccines. The hope is to stop the spread of preventable but deadly diseases in pets.

“We are excited to have veterinary students from Purdue Lafayette attending this year,” she said. “Despite preparing for final exams and graduation, some senior students have made the commitment to help in the clinic to provide free physical exams to registered participants of the event.”
Pet owners also can get rabies, Bordetella, K9 flu and leptospirosis vaccines for $25.00 each and microchips for $30.00. Dogs that test negative for heartworms can get a 1-year preventative for $45.
“Heartworms are a silent killer, spread by mosquitoes. Once they are detected, the treatment can be very costly, and out of reach for struggling pet parents. By providing an affordable preventative can save lives, and financial hardship, that is our goal with these clinics, providing affordable and accessible solutions to pet ownership,” Robinson said. “We are pleased to have worked out a treatment plan for those dogs who have tested positive during our clinic that will be discussed with each individual family.”
Robinson said the access to care clinics educate pet owners that pet healthcare goes beyond vaccines and spaying and neutering them.
“Pet healthcare awareness can ensure that our furry friends live the best life, pain and disease free,” she said. “The partnerships that we have developed over the years with local vets and with teaching veterinary schools are crucial components to making these clinics an asset to the pet community. In addition to providing affordable solutions for pets that have never seen a vet. We create a win-win environment for the community, by encouraging budding new vets to join some of the local practices in the area.”
