Crews rescue 46 dogs from fire inside Pio Costa industrial complex in Fairfield

Police officers rescued dozens of dogs from a fire – and it was all caught on camera.

Police body camera footage shows the moments four Fairfield police officers raced to save lives inside the K9 Resorts pet hotel just off Route 46, inside the Pio Costa industrial complex. Police say a fire sparked Saturday evening at a smoke shop, just a few doors down, which sent smoke traveling into adjoining businesses.

Officer Ryan Cleary was one of the first officers on the scene.

“It was just a maze of kennels and dogs everywhere, so it was getting chaotic. The smoke was getting very thick,” said Cleary.

Police officers, the Fairfield Fire Department, K9 Resorts staff and several others – including some good Samaritans rescued 46 dogs in total.

Officials say once all the dogs were pulled from the smoke-filled building, K9 Resorts staff showed up and moved the dogs to another facility, bringing in a veterinarian make sure to make sure all of them were safe.

“Several of them just had to get a little extra attention afterward at an animal Hospital. But everybody’s OK, all the animals,” said Stacy Chiarolanza, the public information officer for the Fairfield Police Department.

“It was just let’s get as many dogs as we can out safe back to their families,” Cleary said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

There is still no word when K9 Resorts or the other businesses in the complex will reopen.
