Dog and several cats saved in a fire on Syracuse’s northside

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — On Wednesday, Feb. 14, Syracuse Firefighters saved a dog and multiple cats during a fire on the north side of Syracuse.

The Syracuse Fire Department was alerted to the fire in the 200 block of South Alvord St. around 11 p.m. last night, and upon arrival, saw there was a small amount of smoke coming from the back of the one-story, two-family home.

Firefighters headed towards the smoke and saw flames through a window in the rear apartment, and then called additional crews to help.

Crews split up to attack the fire and search for possible trapped people but all the occupants inside were able to escape before the fire department’s arrival.

However, during the search, firefighters located a large dog inside the fire apartment, as well as several cats. The pets were moved to safety outside and eventually reunited with their owners.

The bulk of the fire was extinguished in 10 minutes and then firefighters shifted to an overhaul operation, checking for hidden fire spread by making openings in walls and ceilings. Firefighters also cut a hole in the roof to help remove smoke and other products of combustion from the home.

After the operation was finished, firefighters declared the fire out in approximately 30 minutes and found the cause of the fire was from unattended cooking in the rear apartment kitchen.

The rear apartment suffered fire, smoke, and water damage, and the front apartment also suffered smoke and water damage.

One person from the rear apartment suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene and released. There were no injuries reported to fire department personnel.

Two people were displaced due to the damage caused by the fire.

A total of 37 Fire Department Personnel responded to this incident, including command and support staff.

Syracuse Fire Department Ambulance, Syracuse Police, American Medical Response and National Grid also responded to the scene.
