Dog died and home a loss in South Haven house fire

A dog died and the home was a loss in a South Haven house fire Saturday.

The South Haven Fire Department and several other nearby fire departments were summoned to a residential fire at around 2 p.m. Saturday at the 700W block of 700N in Portage Township, South Haven Fire Department Assistant Chief of Fire Operations Carter Garcia said.

“Smoke was visible en route to the call from several miles away and first-arriving crews were met with heavy fire conditions,” Garcia said. “A second alarm was activated to bring extra manpower to the scene due to the extent of the fire. Crews made entry into the home to extinguish the blaze and search for a dog. Additional crews worked to supply water from a hydrant that was nearly 1,600 feet from the scene.”

No residents or first responders were hurt but a pet dog died as a result of its injuries.

The Pines Fire Department, Porter Fire Department and Lakes of The Four Seasons Fire Department provided coverage during the fire.

“We would like to point out the strong working relationships between all of the fire departments in the area,” Garcia said. “Bringing in extra crews from different jurisdictions helps to ensure that the incident is handled as safely and efficiently as possible, while also making sure the surrounding area is covered for any additional emergencies.”
