Luna’s journey to trust and freedom began with fear and uncertainty. When she first arrived at her new home after years in a North Macedonian shelter, she was terrified and withdrawn. Rescuers had never encountered a dog quite as frightened as Luna. At six years old, Luna had spent over three years in a shelter with 80 other dogs, struggling to survive after being neglected and forced to eat rocks to stave off hunger. She was finally given a chance at a better life, and her progress has been remarkable.
When Luna was first brought home, she had to be carried into the house because she was too scared to walk. She froze in fear at every new sight and sound, even resisting attempts to lead her inside. Her rescuers, patient and gentle, took everything at her pace, sitting with her to build trust. Slowly, she began exploring her new environment. She drank water, sniffed for food, and cautiously accepted treats, though she remained wary of physical affection.
As Luna adjusted, her rescuers introduced her to their other dogs. First, she met Kobe, a calm and gentle dog who instinctively gave her space. Then she met Moi, their energetic ‘mini horse’ of a dog. Though overwhelmed at times, Luna began to relax around them, even showing interest in the puppies, Bunny and Olive. Her rescuers kept the interactions short and positive, ensuring she didn’t feel trapped or stressed.
One of Luna’s biggest challenges was separation anxiety. When left alone, she howled and cried, unsure if her new family would return. Her rescuers implemented a training plan, starting with brief absences and gradually increasing the time they spent away. Luna’s progress was encouraging, and soon, she was staying calm even when left alone for longer periods.
Another hurdle was Luna’s fear of the leash, possibly stemming from past trauma. Her rescuers worked patiently to create positive associations with the leash, allowing her to adjust at her own pace. After weeks of small steps, Luna was ready for her first walk in years. At first hesitant, she quickly began to relax, exploring the outside world with curiosity. Her confidence grew with each walk, especially when accompanied by her canine companions.

Luna’s transformation has been nothing short of inspiring. From a dog too scared to trust, to one enjoying walks and bonding with her new family, she is proof that patience, love, and a little kindness can change a life. Luna’s rescuers continue to celebrate her progress and look forward to the many adventures ahead. She is finally living the life she deserves—a life filled with safety, love, and hope.
