Dogs at Iredell Animal Control lookiing for homes

Are you ready for a new pet in your life? All of these animals are available for adoption at Iredell County Animal Services, 430 Bristol Drive, Statesville.

Finley (A288213) found his way here as a stray and he is ready for a life of family and forever. He is a little overweight at 82.40 pounds, and he is simply adorable! He was already neutered, so we know he was once somebody’s baby, and was even microchipped. But his previous family could not be found and no one ever came for him. This handsome setter retriever mix is estimated at 4 years of age and is ready to start his next chapter! You have to meet this big sweet boy who LOVES squeeze cheese! We always recommend meet and greets prior to adoption. His fee is waived AND his adopter will receive 2 FREE private training sessions with Highland Canine Training. He has now been at the shelter for 62 days and is in need of adoption!

All this week’s pets have been spayed or neutered and are looking for their forever homes. Come and meet them.

All adoptions include spay/neuter, age-appropriate vaccines and microchip. Business hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Access from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday is by appointment.

For current adoption specials, visit the shelter in person as these change frequently.

Carrie Underwood (A288144) has now been here for 65 days! She weighs 44.5 pounds and this beautiful brindle Australian cattle dog and collie mix is letting “Jesus Take the Wheel” on helping her find her perfect family! She is estimated at 1 year, 2 months of age and we always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. We know that her time here with us won’t be “Wasted” when she leaves with her forever and hopefully she will remember her time before her ‘family’ life as “Just a Dream!” Carrie Underwood’s fee is waived and her adopter will receive 2 free sessions with Highland Canine Training! Please come and meet her in person for more information!

The normal fee schedule is as follows: Dogs/puppies, $80; cats/kittens, $65; PetSmart only, cats/kittens, $20.

All adoptions take place during business hours.

Doja (A282148) is looking for a second chance, as she thought she found home before, only to come back here again, through no fault of her own. Her previous owner experienced a major life change that unfortunately meant she had to be returned to the shelter. She has experience in couch cuddles, she is housetrained, she knows sit, down and walks at a ‘loose heel’ which means she can navigate with you very easily with little to no slack on her leash! That’s awesome, Doja! She LOVES and NEEDS structure and she is a sweet girl who knows there is someone out there looking for her, and all of her quirkiness — like not liking her feet to be touched. Something else she loves… a bath! This pretty brindle girl is 66.80 pounds and a beautifully goofy, sweet German Shepherd mix. She is 3 years old and is ready to spend all the rest of her years with you, making happy memories! For more information, please come and meet her in person. We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. Her fee is waived AND her adopter will receive two FREE private training sessions with Highland Canine Training! She has now been here for 62 days and she needs to find her forever family!

Want to help, but you aren’t ready to adopt? How about volunteering? We are looking for long-term volunteers willing and able to give of their ideally weekly, for let’s say … forever? If you are only looking for short-term hours or a certain amount of hours for school service, community service project, special interest or others, please come see us this day, too. For those only needing short-term or limited hours, our volunteer program may not be for you, but we have other options available. We can tell you this for certain … ICAS volunteers are THE best and we can’t do what we do without them.

Meet Murray (A288350)! This playful, yet shy guy came to us from less than desirable circumstances and is ready for forever with his very own family! He is 3 years old and while he came to us underweight, he has already put on 5 pounds, now weighing 41 pounds! He is ready for a life ‘off the chain’, as that was how we found him. If you can give him all the love and care, he can give you forever! We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children with all of our dogs prior to adoption. Come and meet this adorable mastiff mix in person to learn more about him! He has now been here for 59 days and this sweet boy needs to find his family! His fee is waived AND his adopter will receive two FREE private training sessions with Highland Canine Training.

The Books & Buddies reading program is now running. No appointment is necessary. Reading times are from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Bring a book or borrow one from the shelter and grab a stool.

The Books & Buddies guidelines are:

Children of all ages and adults are welcome to read.

Gizmo (formerly known as Willie Nelson) (A288137) finds himself back with us, only because he is just a shy guy who is taking his sweet time coming out of his shell. Because taking his time in opening up, he is hoping his next family will let him go at his pace and not worry if he is a little slow-going. Gizmo is housebroken and was not crated in his previous home, only having ONE accident! He loves being outside and hopes his new family can help him to curb his enthusiasm for wanting to chase stray cats. He was with another dog AND a cat in his previous home and did well with both, really loving playing with the dog! Although he did well with the indoor cat, seems the cat wasn’t a Gizmo fan. And that is OK! Gizmo did well with the children too and while he wasn’t a big player with them, again he seemed very interested in wanting to play with his dog sibling! Don’t get us wrong, he held still for all the human pets, but was more reserved around them than the other dog in the home. SO, we are thinking maybe another dog sibling to help bring him out of his shell, and of course the patience of his new family to work with him on that. He is not a lover of walking on a leash and will really benefit from his new family working with him. This sweet, shy and handsome boy weighs 30 pounds and he so deserves to have the family who will pack their patience when it comes to him opening up, and allow him to do so at his own pace. He is still just 7 months old and trying to figure this whole ‘life’ thing out.

Children 15 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Do not put fingers in the kennels.

Do not run or make loud noises around the animals.

Sit sideways to the dog kennels when reading.

We are hoping someone comes and takes this handsome pupper for the rest of his life! Grant (A288378) has now been here 58 days and while he may not show the ‘real Grant’ when you walk past his kennel, we do hope you ask to have staff get him out to meet him! We can tell you that when you do ask to get him out he is different dog and the ‘real Grant’ comes through! He is such a sweet dog and knows sit, paw and is apparently housebroken! He play bows when he walks past other dogs in their kennels, he walks great on a leash and is such a gentle treat taker! This friendly and sweet boy is thought to be 2 years of age and he came here as a stray. He is a beautiful brindle with that signature flop ear that is Grant specific and adorable! He weighs 58 pounds and we always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. For more information, please come visit him in person. His fee is waived AND his adopter will receive two free private training sessions with Highland Canine Training!

One person can be reading in the cat room at a time.

Readers must track their own service hours. Any staffer can sign off on service hours.

To become a volunteer, a foster owner or both, visit co.iredell.nc.us/149/animal-services-control, call the volunteer coordinator at 704-878-5424, ext. 3507, or stop by the shelter for an application from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Kia (A289402) is here as a result of her owner’s life significantly changing and no longer being able to physically keep up with her, after her husband passed. Kia is 9 years old and this beautiful cream colored German Shepherd is a sweetie. She weighs 63.70 pounds and she does great for all of her exams here, while she isn’t a fan of being restrained, letting you know this by flailing and being a little dramatic. Her previous owner let us know that she is potty trained, did well with her grandchildren and lived with another dog with whom she got along great. She got to meet another dog while being here and although she did her own thing and really didn’t bother with him, she did wag her tail now and then, walking alongside him! Of course, we always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. This super sweet and shy old lady deserves to have the rest of her life be THE BEST of her life!

Fostering is a great way to get the animals out of the shelter for a reprieve and a great opportunity to get them in front of potential adopters they wouldn’t see while being in the shelter.

Fosters are true lifesavers in providing the tender loving care that the cats and kittens so desperately need for the animals’ best possible outcome.

The shelter doesn’t want the fosters to have to provide for the basic care items needed to care for the animals. To donate, the shelter’s address is 430 Bristol Drive, Statesville.

As for size of dry kitten food, 3.15- or 6.3-pound bags are easiest for fosters to handle.

Animal Services also holds drive-thru rabies clinics from 6-7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month. The fee is $5, cash only.

For information, call the shelter at 704-878-5424.
