SHREVEPORT, La. – The woman who died early Friday morning in a fire that also killed more than a dozen pets was known for her love of animals.
Polly Fain was a prominent animal advocate who fostered cats and dogs.
“She was just a kind-hearted soul,” said neighbor Anne Evers, who had been friends with Fain for 20 years. “It just breaks my heart that this is the way she went.”
The Shreveport Fire Department arrived at Fain’s home around 6 a.m. to battle a house fire located off Kings Highway and Preston Avenue.
“We encountered cluttered conditions within the home that increased the difficulty for search and rescue,” fire officials said.
After entering the house, fire crews found Fain near the back door. They also discovered 20 cats and dogs that did not make it out.
Fain also fed stray cats every day.
Carley’s Angels animal rescue said many of the animals that died were rescues Fain cared for.
“Please pray for Polly’s family and friends and all the lost lives. Polly was a huge animal advocate whose own personal philosophy mirrored that Carley’s Angels. She was always for the underdog. The ones no one else would take,” Carley’s Angels posted on its Facebook page. “Fly high Polly and Eli and all the others. You were loved. You will be missed. Your lives mattered. See you at the bridge.”
“I believe all of her animals went with her, and that would have made her happy to be with her babies and cross over the Rainbow Bridge, as she would say about her animals,” Evers said.
Evers said Fain’s next of kin has been notified.
The Shreveport Fire Department also asked for prayers for firefighters who responded to the scene.
“We must also acknowledge the incredible courage of the firefighters who responded to this devastating scene. The sights and sounds they encounter are deeply affecting, and their bravery and resilience in protecting others are truly commendable. As they process this traumatic experience, let us remember the importance of supporting their mental health and well-being in the days to come,” SFD said in a social media post. “In these dark moments, let us come together as a community to support each other and remember the importance of fire safety. May the love and compassion we share uplift us and strengthen our resolve to protect and care for one another.”
Investigators will determine how the fire started.
SFD was unable to determine if there were any working smoke detectors. If a citizen is in need of a smoke detector, SFD will provide and install them for free.
