All of the dogs are safe after a fire near a pet hotel in New Jersey, but that’s only because a lot of people risked their lives to save the animals.
Body cam video from the Fairfield Police Department in Essex County, New Jersey, shows how bad the situation got Saturday night at the K9 Resorts Luxury Pet Hotel. There were 46 dogs staying at the kennel when a fire started a few doors down.
Heavy smoke triggered the fire alarms at the pet hotel, and rescuers knew they needed to try and get the dogs out as quickly as possible.
First responders broke into the business and they, along with some Good Samaritans and K9 Resorts workers, got all 46 dogs out.
“We’re all dog owners and none of us wanted any dogs to come to any harm. Our goal was let’s just get these dogs out,” said Ofc. Ryan Cleary, with Fairfield police.
“It’s a great feeling we know this could have gone bad,” said Ofc. Stacy Chiarolanza, spokesperson for Fairfield police.
One of the officers did suffer smoke inhalation and was being treated for that.
All of the dogs were checked out by a vet and seem to be okay.
