SNACK ATTACK: Add to your dog’s diet with homemade savoury snacks, which could be made using extras from your supermarket shop.
According to Battersea Dogs Home, dried apple slices or a frozen carrot soaked in chicken broth make great, and affordable, snacks.
SNIFF OUT A DEAL: Premium foods with quality ingredients provide better nutrition with fewer fillers.
Bulk-buying is savvy if you can use the food before it hits its expiration date.
For example, get Harringtons’ Super-foods Adult Chicken with Vegetables 1.7kg, now £5.50 instead at Asda instead of the usual £6.50.
BAKE OFF: For pups, rspca.org.uk has a budget recipe for banana-and-peanut-butter treats.
Take a cup of whole wheat flour, half cup of peanut butter and quarter cup of mashed banana, plus quarter cup of vegetable stock.
Be mindful to check the ingredients as peanut butter that contains xylitol is poisonous for dogs. Try Bugalugs dog peanut butter, now reduced from £5.99 to £4.99 at Amazon.co.uk.
Combine the ingredients to make a dough, cut into shape and bake for 18 minutes. Cool before storing to give pups the occasional treat. Also a pup stocking-filler.
