In Xenoblade Chronicles X, as you fight alongside your party members or choose the right dialogue options, you'll build affinity with them.
The higher the affinity, the more heart-to-heart prompts will appear across NLA, allowing you to strengthen your bonds and unlock new Affinity Missions.

Check out our space traveler's guide to best enjoy your time on planet Mira.
However, starting at heart-to-heart level 2, the game begins requiring you to have a pet for specific interactions without actually teaching you how to get one.
In this guide, I'll show you how to find a pet in Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition so you can keep winning over your party members.
Accept the Nine Lives Affinity Mission
To get a pet, you must complete the Nine Lives Affinity Mission. The two requirements to accept the mission are:
- Complete Chapter 5
- Be at level 20
If you made it through the frustratingly hard Chapter 5, you're probably already level 20 or higher, so you should be good to go.
You can find the NPC who gives the quest north of the Commercial District. Fast travel there or, if you haven't unlocked a waypoint yet, talk to a Transport Pilot in any district.
Speak with Matthias, a Mediator for BLADE. He'll explain that Aisha, one of NLA's cats, has gone missing and asks the group to help gather information.
How to Complete Nine Lives
Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is extremely generous with markers. After accepting the mission, choose to track it, and then press L + Y to open your map and see your destination.
Aisha was last seen in the Lower Administrative District. If you have Fast Travel unlocked for the Hangar, go there. If not, head to Armory Alley and just jump down. Use the Follow Ball if needed.
The exact mission location won't show on the map—only a radius where you can gather information.
You have to go to the Hangar's west corner, near Doug's hangout. An NPC named Conner will have a yellow chat icon and provide you with the clue needed when approaching.

Next, fast travel to find Matthias in the Industrial District. The non-combatant BLADE thinks it's a great idea to head straight to Cliffside Beach, a monster-infested area, so follow suit.
As expected, Matthias immediately attracts a violent Indigen. It's a level 20 Grex, easy to handle at this stage of the game, so put it in its place.
After killing the monster, Matthias finds Aisha, but she runs away again. Talk to Matthias, and he'll prepare food bait for Aisha, which will also attract another monster.
This time, it's a level 21 Forfex. Take it down accordingly. Then, fast travel back to NLA's Administrative District to find Matthias and Aisha together and complete the mission.
The rewards for completing Nine Lives are:
- 220 Experience
- 13,000 Money
- x1 Abyssinian (a cat!)
- Learn Ultraslash, a Longsword Art
Now, if you go to the BLADE Barracks and access the Customization Center console, you'll see a new option for Pets. At this point, the Abyssinian cat is your only available choice.
How to Get New Pets in Xenoblade Chronicles X
To get more pets, you need to accept Basic Missions related to them. For example, a Basic Mission called Search Request might appear after completing Nine Lives.
Like all Basic Missions, Search Request appears randomly. If it doesn't show up, exit the interface and interact with the PC again until the mission pops up.
How to Complete the Search Request Basic Mission
You need to go to Biahno River to look for an NPC's missing dog. If you have FN Site 103 unlocked for fast travel, go there. Otherwise, FN Sites 101 or 105 are good alternatives.
Use the Follow Ball for guidance. Eventually, you'll find a Labrador on a rocky ledge. You can reach it by simply jumping from the ground.
Interact with the puppy, and that's it, mission complete. The Labrador can now be found back at the BLADE Barracks in the Customization Center PC. I love how the mission request was “find my dog,” but suddenly, the pet is now ours.
It's a bit annoying, but whenever you do a heart-to-heart that requires either a cat or a dog, you'll need to head to the BLADE Barracks and swap your pets.
In total, three cats and three dogs are available in the game, all obtained by completing Basic Missions. Their breed doesn't affect heart-to-heart events, so choosing which little one you want wandering around your barracks is a matter of preference.
