Iredell shelter seeking homes for five canines

Are you ready for a new pet in your life? All of these animals are available for adoption at Iredell County Animal Services, 430 Bristol Drive, Statesville.

All this week’s pets have been spayed or neutered and are looking for their forever homes. Come and meet them.

Finley (A288213) found his way here as a stray and he is ready for a life of family and forever. He is a little overweight at 82.40 pounds, and he is simply adorable!! He was already neutered when he was found, so we know he was somebody’s baby at one time, and was even microchipped. But his previous family could not be found and no one ever came for him. This handsome setter retriever mix is estimated at 4 years of age and he is ready to start his next chapter! We always recommend meet and greets prior to adoption. You have to meet this big ol’ sweet boy who LOVES squeeze cheese!! We always recommend meet and greets prior to adoption. His fee is waived AND his adopter will receive 2 FREE private training sessions with Highland Canine Training. He has now been at the shelter for 69 days and is in need of adoption!

All adoptions include spay/neuter, age-appropriate vaccines and microchip. Business hours are from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Access from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday is by appointment.

The shelter will be closed Friday for the Easter holiday.

Doja (A282148) is looking for a second chance, as she thought she found a home before, only to come back here again through no fault of her own. Her previous owner experienced a major life change that unfortunately meant she had to be returned to the shelter. She has experience in couch cuddles, she is housetrained, she knows sit, down and walks at a “loose heel” which means she can navigate with you very easily with little to no slack on her leash! That’s awesome, Doja!! She LOVES and NEEDS structure and she is a sweet girl who knows there is someone out there looking for her, and all of her quirkiness. Quirks like not liking her feet to be touched. HEY, we get it!! Something else she loves … a bath, she loves a bath! This pretty brindle girl is 66.80 pounds and a beautifully goofy, sweet German Shepherd mix. She is 3 years old and she is ready to spend all the rest of her years with you, making happy memories with and for you! For more information, come and meet her in person. We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. Her fee is waived AND her adopter will receive two FREE private training sessions with Highland Canine Training! She has now been here for 69 days and she needs to find her forever family!

For current adoption specials, visit the shelter in person as these change frequently.

The normal fee schedule is as follows: Dogs/puppies, $80; cats/kittens, $65; PetSmart only, cats/kittens, $20.

Meet Murray (A288350)! This playful, yet shy guy came to us from less than desirable circumstances and he is ready for forever with his very own family! He is 3 years old and while he came to us underweight, he has already put on 5 pounds, now weighing 41 pounds! He is ready for a life “off the chain,” as that was how we found him. If you can give him all the love and care, he can give you forever! We always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children with all of our dogs prior to adoption. Come and meet this adorable mastiff mix in person to learn more about him! He has now been here for 66 days and this sweet boy needs to find his family! His fee is waived AND his adopter will receive two FREE private training sessions with Highland Canine Training.

Want to help, but you aren’t ready to adopt? How about volunteering? We are looking for long-term volunteers willing and able to give of their time, ideally weekly, for let’s say … forever? If you are only looking for short-term hours or a certain amount of hours for school service, community service project, special interest or others, please come see us, too. For those only needing short-term or limited hours, our volunteer program may not be for you, but we have other options available. We can tell you this for certain … ICAS volunteers are THE best and we can’t do what we do without them.

The Books & Buddies reading program is now running. No appointment is necessary. Reading times are from noon to 5 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Bring a book or borrow one from the shelter and grab a stool.

The Books & Buddies guidelines are:

Children of all ages and adults are welcome to read.

Children 15 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We are hoping someone comes and takes this handsome pupper for GRANTed … for the rest of his life!! Grant (A288378) has now been here 65 days and while he may not show the “real Grant” when you walk past his kennel, we do hope you ask to have staff get him out to meet him! We can tell you that when you do ask to get him out of the kennel … he is different dog and the “real Grant” comes through!!! He is such a sweet dog and knows sit, paw and is apparently housebroken! He play bows when he walks past other dogs in their kennels, he walks great on a leash and is such a gentle treat taker!! This friendly and sweet boy is thought to be 2 years of age and he came here as a stray. He is a beautiful brindle with that signature flop ear that is Grant specific and adorable!! He weighs 58 pounds and we always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. For more information on this sweet boy, come visit him in person. His fee is waived AND his adopter will receive two free private training sessions with Highland Canine Training!!

Do not put fingers in the kennels.

Do not run or make loud noises around the animals.

Sit sideways to the dog kennels when reading.

One person can be reading in the cat room at a time.

Readers must track their own service hours. Any staffer can sign off on service hours.

To become a volunteer, a foster owner or both, visit co.iredell.nc.us/149/animal-services-control, call the volunteer coordinator at 704-878-5424, ext. 3507, or stop by the shelter for an application from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Fostering is a great way to get the animals out of the shelter for a reprieve and a great opportunity to get them in front of potential adopters they wouldn’t see while being in the shelter.

Fosters are true lifesavers in providing the tender loving care that the cats and kittens so desperately need for the animals’ best possible outcome.

Kia (A289402) is here as a result of her owner’s life significantly changing and no longer being able to physically keep up with her, after her husband died. Kia is 9 years old and this beautiful cream-colored German Shepherd is a sweetie. She weighs 63.70 pounds and she does great for all of her exams here, while she isn’t a fan of being restrained, letting you know this by flailing and being a little dramatic. Her previous owner let us know that she is potty trained, did well with her grandchildren and lived with another dog with whom she got along great. She got to meet another dog while being here and although she did her own thing and really didn’t bother with him, she did wag her tail now and then, walking alongside him! Of course, we always recommend meet and greets with other dogs and children prior to adoption. This super sweet and shy old lady deserves to have the rest of her life be THE BEST of her life!

The shelter doesn’t want the fosters to have to provide for the basic care items needed to care for the animals. To donate, the shelter’s address is 430 Bristol Drive, Statesville.

As for size of dry kitten food, 3.15- or 6.3-pound bags are easiest for fosters to handle.

Animal Services also holds drive-thru rabies clinics from 6-7 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month. The fee is $5, cash only.

For information, call the shelter at 704-878-5424.
