Owner rushes her greedy dog to the vet after he wolfed down an entire tub of Celebrations – including the wrappers

A woman has revealed the heart-stopping moment she realised her dog had eaten an entire box of Celebrations – including the wrappers.

Owner Erin Lewis, from Birkenhead, Merseyside, dashed to the vets with her Cocker Spaniel, Mow, after the pup managed to climb onto the counter and scoff the whole box of chocolates.

Erin was in the middle of getting ready to the Christmas markets with her mother when she noticed shiny wrappers littered around the living room.

Chocolate is toxic to dogs and Erin called the emergency vet after noticing Mow had eaten them, and her pet was seen at a clinic that same night.

Mow was given an injection to vomit up the toxic treats – and while filming the poor canine’s ordeal, Erin pointed out each of the famous chocolate wrappers as they made their way back up.

Mow was given an injection to vomit up the toxic treats – and while filming the poor pup’s ordeal Erin listed out the chocolate bar wrappers she could see

The beauty salon owner said: ‘Although he can be a greedy little b****rd sometimes, we needed to make sure he was okay.’

Erin explained: ‘The box was full – there were wrappers everywhere, and all Celebrations were gone. He had eaten all the Celebrations.

Why is chocolate so dangerous for dogs to eat?

Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine, which is toxic to dogs.

Even small amounts of it can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and heart problems.

The darker the chocolate, the higher the level of theobromine, and therefore the more toxic it is.

White chocolate, although it doesn’t contain enough theobromine to cause toxicity, is fatty and full of sugar and can pose a potential risk of pancreatitis.

Even without the danger of toxicity, chocolate is not a healthy snack for dogs, causing obesity and poor health, and is therefore best avoided.

‘After I noticed that he had eaten all of the chocolates, I stayed with him to keep an eye on him and called the emergency vet.’

Erin said Mow was booked in to see a vet that night at 7.30 – and they arrived just in time, because he had taken a turn for the worse and began to go to the toilet in the waiting room.

According to Erin, the vet informed them that all the chocolate had sat in his stomach, causing him to look bloated.

This led the vet to administer the dog with an injection that could help bring up the chocolate to get it out of his system.

Not long after this, the Cocker Spaniel began throwing up the chocolate he had eaten, with Erin and her family comforting the poorly pup as he got it all out.

She explained: ‘If anyone finds themselves in this situation with a greedy dog, make sure you get them to the vets within four hours of eating the chocolate.

‘Just make sure you look after your dogs and don’t let them eat Bounties for a living.’

In a video filmed by Erin, she pans to the floor which is littered with chocolate wrappers.

Speaking to a rather guilty-looking Mow, Erin says: ‘Hey don’t you be going back for more.

‘Did you eat all of them? Did you?’

‘He has eaten all the Celebrations, his belly is rock hard.’

As chocolate is toxic to dogs, Erin called the emergency vet after noticing Mow had eaten them and the pup was seen at a clinic that same night

Turning again to Mow she says: ‘You look very ill now Mow. Is it hurting, is your belly hurting?’ as her pet tries to jump up onto her lap.

The clip then switches to the vet where you can see Mow has started to go to the toilet.

After being given the injection, poor Mow is seen throwing up several times – before the video ends showing him looking very sick and sad in the front of the car on the drive home.

During the festive period, a lot of the food people associate with Christmas is full of toxins which are dangerous to dogs.

Chocolate in particular is poisonous to dogs because it contains theobromine, which is a chemical that is similar to caffeine. This can make a dog seriously unwell, or in rare cases die, if consumed in large amounts.

Robin Hargreaves, senior veterinary adviser for Agria Pet Insurance, said: ‘Traditional Christmas foods, such as mince pies and Christmas pudding, are full of things that are toxic to our pets, including raisins and grapes. There are often no symptoms until the dog becomes very ill, very suddenly.

‘Owners who think their pets have ingested any of these should contact their vet for advice immediately.

‘Of course, prevention is key, and it is always far better to be extremely vigilant and prevent access to these foods, as well as other Christmas hazards, throughout the festive season.’
