Repticon takes over this weekend at Central Florida Fairgrounds

FOX 35's Matt Trezza gives us a look at some of the exotic animals you can expect to see at Repticon.

ORLANDO, Fla. – They're scaly, slick and slithery, and this weekend they’ve taken over the Central Florida Fairgrounds. Repticon is back in Orlando.

The two-day event allows visitors to buy exotic reptiles and other non-traditional pets. Attendees also can buy supplies, cages and other essentials they'd need to care of the reptiles.

“It's maybe a niche market,” said Lisa Parker, a Repticon manager. “Some people may not understand it as much as a typical dog or cat, but the love is the same.”

Organizers said about a hundred vendors are attending this weekend's show.

This included Eddie Soto, who was selling lizards and other reptiles, ranging in price from around $30 to more than $500.

“It's pretty much a mixture of common stuff to some rare stuff,” Soto said. “Easy for the beginner, and some of the intermediate or advanced stuff for the higher-up keeper.”

Reptile fans said they do make great pets, but experts said you've got to know how to properly feed and take care of them.

“Some animals are more detailed, some are a lot easier,” said Elizabeth Wisneski, of the Florida chapter of the United States Association of Reptile Keepers. “Some have special lights and special needs. So, understand your care before you make your commitment.”

Repticon will continue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Reptile fans said they might not be the typical pets, but they love their cold-blooded companions.

“They're really friendly, and they don't really bite that much,” said 9-year-old Taytum Womack, who bought a small corn snake. “They're just really cute, cuddly and friendly!”
