Nestlé Purina Dunkirk on Monday celebrated the incredible bond shared between people and their pets as part of National Dog Day.
“Purina believes people and pets are better together and there are many ways to celebrate with your pup,” says Dr. Callie Harris, senior veterinary communications manager for Purina. “As veterinarians say, a tired dog is a happy dog. Engaging your dog in physical activities, whether it’s walking, playing, or swimming, helps them stay calm and improves trainability, making them happier and better behaved at home.”
Purina Dunkirk has compiled a list of veterinarian-approved tips to celebrate your pet:
— Take your dog out for a walk using a long line leash. This allows them to explore more freely, sniffing and capturing information with their strong sense of smell, which can be mentally enriching and stimulating. Make sure the environment is safe, with minimal traffic and distractions. In Dunkirk, check out Hazelton Dog Park where Purina has donated trees, providing shade for playful pups. Remember to bring water for your pup!
— Before heading out for a walk, play with your dog using toys like a flirt pole, which is similar to a cat toy but designed for dogs. This helps burn off excess energy, making your dog calmer and more receptive to leash training during the walk.
— Temperatures are still warm here in Dunkirk. Consider setting up a kiddie pool or puppy pool for your dog to splash around in. This is a fun and refreshing way for them to enjoy the end of summer.
— If the weather isn’t ideal, keep your dog entertained indoors with engagement toys. Puzzle toys or tug-of-war games are great for physical and mental stimulation. This is also a perfect way to involve the whole family, letting kids play with the dog to tire them both out.
— Purina offers a wide range of treats such as Beggin’ Strips, Busy Bone, DentaLife and more. Pick your favorite or try a new variety. In Dunkirk, Purina produces pet-approved Busy Bones, DentaLife and Prime Bones treats.
— Volunteer or adopt a pet at Lakeshore Humane Society that receives donated product from Purina.
Purina Dunkirk is part of the 23-factory network that feeds 46 million dogs every year, producing brands loved by pets. Since 1972, the Dunkirk team of more than 500 associates have worked hard to deliver safe, high-quality, nutritious pet care products that have growing demand such as Purina Pro Plan, Purina ONE, Cat Chow and Dog Chow. Dunkirk is also the only location to produce Busy Bones, DentaLife and Prime Bones treats.
“National Dog Day is a special occasion to recognize the joy and companionship that dogs bring to our lives. We’re proud that our community support such as providing the Pet Pantry pet care donations and beautification of Hazelton Dog Park allow those in Chautauqua County more opportunities for people and their pets to celebrate together,” said Anthony De La O, Purina Dunkirk factory manager. “Today I’ll be celebrating with my dogs, Sarge, Armani and Apollo, by doing their favorite activity, playing catch.”
