Wayne house fire leaves building uninhabitable, kills pet dog

A huge fire that broke out in a family home in Wayne Township around 10 p.m. Saturday left a family pet dead and the house uninhabitable. Two firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital. One of them was admitted to Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains with a leg injury.

The family occupying the house was not at home when the fire broke out. A pet dog was found deceased in the house.

Three of Wayne’s five volunteer fire companies were dispatched to the house fire at 52 Lenox Road, and the others put on alert, said Fire Commissioner Frank Velardi. Fire companies 3 and 5 were dispatched initially and company 2 was added to the call when visible flames were seen coming from the building, Velardi said.

The fire houses attending to the emergency were backfilled with mutual aid from Lincoln Park, Pequannock and Pompton Lakes.

Fire units cleared the scene at around 1:50 a.m. Sunday, Velardi said. The Wayne Township Fire Inspection Bureau is still investigating the cause of the fire.
