A three-month-old boy was killed after being attacked by the family pet, a hybrid animal that was part dog and part wolf, police in Alabama said.
The boy had been bitten but was still alive when authorities arrived at the home in Chelsea, near the city of Birmingham, but died in hospital, according to the Shelby County sheriff’s office. The police are investigating the death.
Police said the family, who have not been identified, kept a “wolf-hybrid” as a pet and that the animal was destroyed after attacking the child on Thursday. Lina Evans, the coroner for Shelby County, said the family were aware of the dog’s wolf lineage.
Wolf-dog hybrids are the offspring that result from a wolf mating with a domestic dog.
